Healing in stunning scenery

10/25/26
Hello again! I wanted to give an update on my treatment/recovery process, plus share some photos of a stunning day I had a few days ago. Today, the rain has started for the season. The 9-day forecast on my phone calls for rain every single day, and high temps in the 50s. I’m so glad I got out and enjoyed every moment I could when the sun was out! In the almost two weeks since my surgery, I have been walking 1-2 hours almost every day. I think with the rain and gloom, I’ll be spending more time inside, working on a few projects I’ve been putting off for months.
My friends and neighbors have continued to be wonderfully supportive, offering me rides to the grocery store and carrying the groceries for me since they are still too heavy. One friend, who used to live here in Portland for many years but has now been living in Austin for a number of years, even sent me these cozy PJs! Cats and desserts—I love it! (I’m wearing them as I type!)

My post-surgery appointment will be this Tuesday, and then on Wednesday I’ll go up to “Pill Hill” to learn more about the radiation treatments I’ll be starting in a month or so. Then on the 5th, I’ll meet with the oncologist to discuss possible hormone therapy.
But for now, I’m lounging on the couch and catching up on computer tasks.
A wonderful local friend, who is a bonsai master, was able to get me into the Portland Japanese Garden for free on our last 70+ degree sunny day, about a week ago, and it was even more stunning than usual, if that’s possible:

After walking around the garden and soaking it all in, I then walked an hour along the nearby (now famous!) Wildwood Trail, which was also spectacular in the fall color and light.

I got to walk across the “new” (2019) Barbara Walker Crossing bridge over Burnside Street, which was so much more pleasant and safe than the old option would have been—running across the busy road and then scaling some steep stairs.

At the end of my hike was a famous Portland tourist spot that somehow, in all my 36 years here, I had never seen: Pittock Mansion! I decided to forego the $20 tour of the house, but I walked the grounds and finally got to see for myself the fabled view. Wow!! I think I hit it exactly right, light-and-foliage-wise, for my first visit.

I’ll plan to check in again in another week or so to update you on my healing and treatment, and also to share the gorgeous photos I got yesterday in Tryon Creek State Park, on (probably) our last warmish and sunny day of the year!
